Xbox One gets a Media Remote
For a computer console that was released as the media hub of your home it was a bit weird that it was released without a remote control for sale let alone not included in the bundle itself. but alas this was not the case. Since then the remote control for the Xbox One has been in production and will be available soon to Xbox One owners. Maybe not the biggest piece of news for the gamer perhaps but there will be a select amount of people that were waiting for this device to be launched. The media remote will control the Blu-Ray player, basic TV controls and streaming controls. The remote will be able to control your TV's basic functions as well by using the Kinect as an IR blaster to send the signal to your TV. By using this functionality the Media remote can also control your AV receiver for functions such as volume control.
The Media remote is of a simple design with idea that its easy to use in dark situations such as when you are watching the movie, as such there isn't too many confusing buttons to press accidentally which could spoil the enjoyment of a movie. what it does have are channel changers up and down, volume controls, Blu-Ray / DVD controls (Play Pause rewind etc) a back button and a one touch access to the Microsoft One guide which if setup will take you to the list of whats on TV and what movies are available to rent etc. from the Xbox Marketplace.
Another feature which will be used again when you are in a low light situation is the automatic illumination of the buttons when you pick up the Xbox One's Media remote. So finding the buttons should not be a problem, plus when you put the remote down the illumination will go off conserving battery power.
Design wise the remote is a nice small easy to hold piece of equipment. It is also very easy to reach all the buttons with your thumb because of its size. The illuminating buttons are a nice touch which add to the functionality of the media remote as well as its overall style. It also has a soft silicone finish which is nice to hold, its not abrasive or slippy in your hand. Downside is the amount it will be used, Are people really using the Xbox One as there full entertainment Hub? are you watching all your Blu-Rays on your Xbox or do you have a Blu-Ray Player? what amount letting the Xbox take control of your TV and being in always on mode? we'd like to hear from you to see if you think this device is worth the money and if the way the Xbox One has been Marketed is the way you use it. The Media Remote will be released in early March with a price tag of $24.99 for the American markets, its likely to have a simultaneous worldwide release but we don't have specific pricing information as yet for the UK. However Amazon UK are showing a pre-order price of £19.99 at time of writing.
