The second of the games that kept me busy while on holiday was Baseball Superstars the 2013 edition, I was a little undecided whether or not to start playing this game because even though I do like the game as I’ve played previous versions I know that once again its based on a freemium game model and I was also aware that unlike the Order and Chaos game I previously reviewed that this one is known for requiring you to spend money if you want any real chance of getting far in the game. Never the less I decided that I could play it on holiday and if I got stuck without spending any real money then I would simply stop playing when I got home. So on to the game itself.

<a href="http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=45&d=1369041187" title="Name: bs2013-splash.jpg

Baseball superstars 2013 is designed to be like a player experience in the game of baseball, by this I mean you do not take control of a whole team and play every aspect of the game but you will be controlling one player (either a batter or a pitcher to start although you can decide to play two games and have one of each but these will be separate games) During the course of the season you have to play you part in making you team successful. You do this by not only training your player to get more skills and power etc but also by upgrading the rest of you team. And of course you do this by using the in game currency. G points (presumably Gamevil points) are the basic currency, with these you can do all the day to day routines such as training using basic boosts and charging your super batting skill. You will earn these by playing well impressing your manager or by doing missions and tasks throughout the game. The second unit of currency are stars. Stars are gained by either purchasing them, or taking advantage of Gamevil offers (such as downloading other programs etc) other than that you get a very small bonus for playing the game each day. The free stars might be enough to get the basic powerups on regular basis but certainly not enough to get you the best stuff. Even if you claimed the most free stars available everyday you would struggle to get the top end gear you will probably need to get to the very top of the game.

This is a real shame because baseball superstars 2013 is certainly one of those games that i would of been prepared to buy at the start if it was free after that, the idea that i will keep having to spend money on really has since put me off. In the interests of fairness however I'm going to go through the game with you because it is actually a very playable and addictive game before you realise that there is a certain point where it will simply get too hard for many players.

My Batter

The mode I chose to play first was My Batter, this means you take control of a single player in the batting line up and whenever its your turn at the plate you will have your chance to show your stuff. However you must remember that you are part of a team here and are trying to get your team the victory, without your team winning you cannot progress. With this in mind sometimes you need to try and hot for the home run an others you may need to simply sacrifice yourself by trying a bunt to get base runners further round. You will start as the number 9 batter. You can change batting positions in the game but not until you impress your manager with your skills.

BS2013-game.jpg

Actually batting is quite tough to begin with but the controls are very simple. The pitcher will throw you a variety of pitches and you first have to decide if its a pitch you should swing at or if indeed it will be a "ball" after that you simply press the swing button timing it right for a great hit, time it wrong and you will send a dribbler back to the mound or pop up for an easy out. This game being how it is however and that is arcade style, there are various power ups you can use to help you get the contact you want. Firstly is your batters own statistics of Power, Contact, Base running and Mental.

Power - As it says this states how hard your player can hit the ball, Baseball isn’t all about power but a strong player can sometimes make a bad shot go the distance.

Contact - The Contact rating determines how the batter see's the pitch and how much of a decent contact he makes with it. Contact style batters usually lack power but are good at getting the ball in play and striking out less often.

Base running - This stat shows you how quick the batter runs the bases as well as how good his base running decisions are.

Mental - During the pitcher vs batter duel the mental stat is very important. In Baseball Superstars each player has special skills that improve their performance however between the batter and pitcher only the one with the higher mental rating can use their skills.

After each game your manager will give you a rating from S (best) to F (worst) this will determine how many G points you earn as well as condition points and active points. Condition is the physical condition that your player is in. Training, playing matches and failing tasks reduces your players condition rating. Beware as your condition decreases you players stats reduce as well. Recovering condition can be done by resting or by completing missions and pleasing your manager. Active points are there to limit the amount of things you can do between games. Training or charging your super batting takes active points, resting also takes active points away from your total.

Baseball Superstars 2013 is not simply a baseball game where you try and win matches it also has a storyline to follow. Other characters come into play and change the game into something more than just hit a baseball and try and win each game. The story mode just adds a little extra and makes it more like a one baseball player experience rather than a simulation baseball game. Infact this is very far away from being a simulation game, its arcade all over just to warn you in case a true baseball game is what you are after.

My Pitcher

The general premise of the game is the same with the My Pitcher game, but of course you take control of one of the teams pitchers. You can choose to be a starter, reliever or a closer. The stats of your player are the other part of the game that changes here as the batter stats are mainly not relevant. With a pitcher you have Control, Speed, Mental and Curve.

Control - This stat is for how close to your chosen spot you pitcher throws the ball, higher control pitchers can pin point a pitch where they want it.

Speed - Basic pace here how fast can your pitcher throw his fast ball. Pitchers that can throw real heaters often do so at the expense of some control.

Mental - Exactly the same as the batters mental rating, it determines who out of the batter and pitcher can use their special skills.

Curve - How much movement your pitcher can place on a pitch, a high curve rating can confuse batter by moving the ball around the strike zone and cause pop ups and ground outs.

There is an element of timing in the pitching as well. First job while pitching is to select a pitch, once you have done that you control a curser to select the position of the pitch, this is harder than it sounds because it keeps moving until you press the action button, then to get the accuracy of the pitch you have to stop the closing circle as close to the end as possible without going too far, you will see what i mean when you play it.

Upgrading your team

BS2013-home.jpg

In order to progress in either my batter or my pitcher modes you will need to upgrade your team as you can’t carry a whole team on your own. to do this you will need G points and upgrade potions. These are acquired throughout the game, bought at the store or earned through tasks. Each time you upgrade one of your team there stats increase and they become a slightly better player. Bear in mind though that you have a whole team of batters relief batters, pitchers, relief pitchers and closers, you have to look after them all otherwise a weak link in your team could let you down. Its all about managing the team in the best way between the different playing staff and your own player.

Upgrading your player is slightly different, it also requires G points but you need an upgrade stone instead of an upgrade potion (these are harder to come by) but can be earned quicker by winning Player vs player games (check out the main game screen for PvP) Also when you upgrade your player you only upgrade one aspect of your game i.e. power, contact etc.

Upgrading is not always successful as I found out a bit later in the game, the higher you level up the harder is to progress further. In order to increases you chances of being able to upgrade you can increase your upgrade success rate. This however you have to pay for once you have used your few free ones.

Equipment

As well as upgrading your player you can also upgrade the equipment that you use in the game. Bother batters and pitchers can upgrade their equipment. You can purchase new items such as improved bats, gloves, boots, helmets and more. Each upgrade improves your players stats in a different way. The lower rated equipment can be bought with G points however the best equipment is reserved for users with available stars and quite a few are needed for the better items.

Super abilities

In true arcade style you can give your players super abilities that will help you bat or pitch these can be bought in the shop, I won’t go through them all as they are explained in the store when you purchase them, as I said before however the best ones are reserved unless you spend thousands of stars which will cost you real money.

As well as this you can activate super batter and super pitcher modes for one "at bat" these turn your player into a force to be reckoned with, weirdly the exact boost that you get from this depends on your relationship in the story mode. More on that next. You have a very limited amount of this boost some use it when you really need it.

Relationships

During the story you will come across a variety of female characters of which you will develop relationships with, as you go further into the story the more of these characters will appear. You can select which one you are in a relationship with, different characters offer different perks during the game. For instance the first character called Medica gives you extra condition points when you rest improving your stats for the next game. They also offer different features when you activate the super player.

Nicknames

In the ever increasing ways that you can improve your players stats, we have nicknames. Sounds a bit weird again but just roll with it, it kind of makes sense. As you progress through the game you will achieve different titles that you will be able to set as your nickname. Different nicknames offer different stat boosts, there are loads that you can achieve and you can change them as often as you like to either boost a low stat or make your best attribute even better.

Overview

So there you go I’m sure there is plenty more in the game that I even haven’t got to yet or haven’t mention but Baseball Superstars certainly has some great depth to it if you want to take it all in. At the same time it’s a great pick up and play game when you get a few minutes while travelling, or on holiday etc. Downsides are obviously the freemium model which I keep banging on about which means unless your very skilled you will find it near impossible to beat the best teams without spending money and the fact that you will need an internet connection to start the game, not really sure why this is the case unless you are purchasing things but that’s how its set up.
I recommend getting this game if you like baseball, as it’s a really fun game to play, however I urge people to fight against the idea that you have to keep paying for a game once you have it as I’m sure after reading this that you know I think this is the most frustrating thing to hit gaming in a long time. If this was a fiver to buy then I would make the purchase however in its current format I have no intention of giving the developer any money, their loss on what is a nicely produced game.

Hi all,

Well what a fun packed and exciting newsletter i've got for you today, first of all if you haven't already noticed there have been some new things added to the site, so for those of you who haven't noticed we've had a play around with the navbar to incorporate links to our avatars mod and a new feature called Triple Triad.

So to explain a little on the new feature, its a card game from final fantasy 8 in where you can collect cards from decks we've designed and battle against other members or the computer to win as many games and cards as possible to complete your collection. heres a little bit about Triple triad:

Triple Triad is played on a three-by-three (3x3) square grid of blank spaces, where cards will be placed as the game progresses. The cards depict various characters, monsters, and bosses from the game. Each card has four numbers (known as Ranks) placed in top left corner; each number corresponds to one of the four sides of the card. These numbers range from one to nine, the letter A representing ten. On the top right of the card there is sometimes an elemental symbol representing the card's element. The elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Poison, Holy, Lightning, Wind, and Ice. There are two card colors, pink (the opponent's cards) and blue (the player's cards).
In a basic game of Triple Triad, each player has five cards. A coin-flip decision is made to decide which of the two players will begin. The player who wins the coin toss may then choose a card to play anywhere on the grid. After the first card is played, the opposing player may then play a card on any unoccupied space on the board. The game continues with players' turns alternating in this fashion.

To win, a majority of the total ten cards played (including the one card that is not placed on the board) must be of the player's card color. To do this, the player must capture cards. To capture a card, the player must place cards adjacent to an opponent's card, whereupon the 'ranks' of the sides where the two cards touch will be compared. If the rank of the opponent's card is higher than the player's card, the player's card will be captured and turned into the opponent's color. If, however, it is the player's rank that is higher, the opponent's card will be captured and changed into the player's color instead. Capturing can only occur during that player's turn, and no other opponent can capture a card during said turn.
A 'draw' will occur if the player and the opponent possess equal numbers of cards in their color on the board. Depending on alternate card rules, this can be defined by a 'sudden death' scenario where the first person to capture a card in a new game wins, or by playing until a winner is defined. The winner claims a prize of taking one or more of the loser's cards, depending upon the rules in effect.

There are ten card levels in the game. Level 1 cards have low ranks like 1's and 2's and 3', while level 10 cards have 8's, 9's, and A's. The seven cards that squall gets for free near the beginning of the game are all level 1. Multiple copies of all the cards in Level 1 to 7 can be obtained and kept, whereas the gf and player cards are rarer, with only one copy able to be obtained at any one time.

I'll try and add a link to the full set of rules later on, but this game is highly addictive and fun to play. so far we have the original final fantasy 8 collection and my pokemon collection, within the next few weeks i'll be adding some other collections so that your collecting addiction can comense.

i'll also hold some tournaments and such where there will be awards for the best TT player on the forums!

YOUTUBE

If your a regular follower of our youtube channel we are closing in on the 10k milestone for views, i'm really excited and happy that we've gotten so far and i'll be working hard to provide some new entertainment in the following months ahead. as i state in most newsletters, the channel will really pick up speed once my new PC is built when i can start working on streaming some epic PC games.

Hope you all like the new editions to the site and thanks again for your continued support!

Order and Chaos - Duels is a Trading card game based on the MMORPG Order and Chaos by the same developer. The closes thing that this game comes to is the popular TCG Magic the gathering. I have played this type of game before online and it hasn’t really come close to Magic, however after I gave this one some time it has really come alive and has became very addictive. The main thing that really grabbed my attention is that this is a Freemium model (ie the game is free but there are in game purchases to help you along) Normally I hate this model I would rather pay for the game and have done with it. However this game does not require you to spend money if you wish not to, the game is perfectly playable and completable without the need to spend any cash. Of course should you wish to then you can advance your gameplay by buying boosts and stronger cards quickly by purchasing card packs. But what’s really impressive is that all the extra's in the game given time can be gained by simply playing the game. So now that’s out of the way lets have a look at the game.

<a href="http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=41&d=1368465124" title="Name: order-and-chaos-duels1.jpg

Gameplay

Those of you who are familiar with trading card games will be able to pick this up very quickly, the basic rules are the same all though there are some slight differences in gameplay and some of the in game mechanics may have different names than that you are used to if you have played Magic the Gathering or other such games. This makes it a nice easy learning curve for you. If your new to this type of game don’t fear, they are an easy game to learn but a more difficult game to master, therefore getting into the game is easy enough and then you can decide how much time you want to put into learning and mastering it.

order-and-chaos-duels-board.jpg

Above is the game play board, it has five slots on each side, this is where you play your creatures (Going to call them creatures but in the game they will be referred to as minions), Creatures are the main part of the game however like other trading card games these will be complimented with spells, enchantments and equipment. Creatures come with an attack rating and a health rating. The attack rating describes how many damage points your creature can dish out and the health rating shows how many damage points your creature can take before it dies. Unlike some other trading card games however once your creature takes damage it does not recover its health unless a spell or ability heals it, this means that even though you have a beastie creature on the field it can eventually be brought down with good tactics and smaller creatures. Creatures are there to achieve two things, to protect your hero and to inflict damage to your opponent’s hero. By bringing your opponents hero to 0 life points you win the match.

The Heros

The Game Order and Chaos is a classic good vs evil type battle. There are two factions on each side and 4 different heros in each faction giving you a choice of 16 different characters to play as (you can have more than one character playing at a time, extra characters are unlocked when you can afford them). Humans and Elves are in the Order and Chaos is constructed of the Orcs and the Undead. These are then split into different character roles of warrior, monk, ranger and mage. Each of these has a different ability called a heroic ability which can be used throughout the battle. Each character has its own unique ability and will shape the way you construct your deck.

The Battle

When you start your first battle you will notice the board layout with the five slots on each side these are creature slots and can be played on at any time that you can afford your creature. That brings me to the mana system, each turn you will have a set amount of mana in which to play your creatures and spells. You start with 2 mana (or three of you start the game after your opponent) Each card will have a number in the corner which denotes how much mana is required to cast that card. Obviously more powerful cards require more mana to cast. In order to gain more mana you have to sacrifice one of you cards in your hand to the graveyard on the right hand side of the board. Each time you sacrifice a card you will gain one extra total mana which will stay with you each turn so its a good idea to make sure your sacrifice a card for each of your early turns or you could find yourself struggling to keep up with your opponent. You can only sacrifice one card per turn however.

Deciding which slot to play your creatures in is the main part of the tactics in this game as your creature attack directly across the board to the opposite slot. If there is a creature opposite then it will attack the creature if however no creature is opposite then it will attack the hero directly and decreasing your opponents health points. There are of course many more things to consider with all the different card effects but these are better learned from playing the game as that will help you with your strategy.

Some of the mechanics that you will encounter early in the game are ones that you will have to master to start you out on the right foot.

Stunned - This prevents the creature from attacking on the next turn, very useful against large or powerful creatures when you need another turn to protect yourself.

Bleeding - This reduces the health points of the creature at the end of there turn, it comes in varying values depending on the creature or the spell

Poisoned - Similar to Bleeding this effect takes health off the creature or hero on each turn until cured. Again the value changes depending on the creature or spell.

Breach attack - Like Trample in Magic, this effect means that after a creature is destroyed any attack points that were "extra" will be dealt as damage to the enemy hero.

Protector - If your creature has protector it takes the damage of any attacks aimed at creatures in the next slot instead of that creature (Called neighbours in Order and Chaos Duels), useful next to creatures that you really don’t want to lose.

Retaliate - When your creature is attacked the retaliate mechanic deals damage back to the that creature depending on what the retaliate value is. If your creature has retaliate 3 then every time its attacked it will deal 3 damage back to opposing creature

Armoured - This is a defence mechanic for your creatures and hero, the value of the armoured mechanic determines how much damage is absorbed before health is reduced.

There are many more mechanics in the game and you learn them as you progress in the campaign or come across harder players in the multiplayer menu. Fortunately each mechanic is well described on the cards so you can easily know how to use them. What cards and mechanics work well together however is the art form of the game and everyone has there own style.

Campaign

<a href="http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=40&d=1368465116" title="Name: order-_-chaos-duels-campaign.jpg

The campaign mode is relatively straight forward as you beat progressively harder AI controls opponents each with there own style of deck and each with their own special heroic ability for you to work out how to beat, a few attempts and a bit of deck tweaking such get you past most opponents. If however you find one too difficult then make sure you level up your hero by either pillaging other players or avenging friends (see later in Multiplayer) As you increase your hero's level by gaining XP, not only will you get new cards but you will also get increased health and deck size limit to creating even better and well prepared decks. By following this model you will soon be racing past the campaign mode and gaining more xp and cards on the way. This will give you a better chance in the multiplayer scene where many players have well constructed decks.

The campaign is set over the course of different islands and a vague story is told about an enemy called Velik, your goal is to destroy all of his followers and minions along the way to ultimately defeat him. Quite basic but easy to understand and the opponents are varied even if the AI is shaky in its gameplay at times. Each time you activate a new hero you will have to go through the campaign from the beginning with each one. This is good though as the new hero will have the lowest deck size and lowest health, so beating the campaign is a good way to quickly gain the XP required.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer scene is really what trading card games are all about, its what most people head to in order to test there created decks against others. While this is possible in Order and Chaos Duels and it does have a ranked leaderboard it does have one major failing, which Gameloft must surely be working on. That is the ability to play unranked games against your friends. There is no facility to invite another specific player to a game. Its easy enough to play against another player by entering a ranked or custom duel but sometimes you just want to play against a friend and as yet this is not possible.

There also doesn’t seem to be any sort of grading when comes to the multiplayer gaming, you are just as likely to come up against a newbie as you are to play against a veteran player with an epic deck. While you do get more ranking points for beating people higher up the ladder than you, I think some sort of matchmaking AI is in order, but the game isn’t that old yet and some of these features may come.

I have had some problems with the game dropping out or claiming that there is no internet connection when there is, unfortunately when this happens you automatically lose the game and it counts against your ranking. On the plus side it is happened to my opponents as well as this give me ranking points so you can say its swings and roundabouts. Better off fixed though I think.

Getting better cards

order-and-chaos-duels-cards.jpg

In order to upgrade your deck you will need new cards, there are 4 different card levels that you can obtain, Common cards, uncommon cards, rare cards and epic cards. These go up in value and normally up in mana cost to cast. You have to purchase cards by one of the two currency types in Order and Chaos Duels. These are gold and runes. Gold is easy to obtain and can be used to purchase the common cards and boosts to help you in the campaign mode. Runes are harder to come by but they are there to get without the need to spend any extra money on the game (Of course if you want new cards quicker then you can support the game by buying extra runes.

Presuming that you don’t want to purchase any runes that you have to work to get them, when I say work I mean duel. You can gain runes in several ways. The easiest way is to work your way through the campaign, as you beat each character you can gain runes and gold. You also gain runes and gold as you level up your hero. You can also unlock new cards and card packs as your hero progresses in the game. If you select campaign mode you will see in the bottom left of the screen a character in flames with the words pillage players. Pillaging other players can gain you gold and runes providing you can beat their deck with the computer AI playing it. To be honest the Pillage AI is pretty poor and you would need an awesome deck to stop yourself from getting pillaged so this is a great way to gain yourself some runes. The best part is even if you are getting pillaged yourself, you don’t actually lost any currency. This is because you are pillaging the bonus of other players. Bonuses are given to offline players when they come back to the game, its put down as your hero collecting treasure while you were away, however if someone attacks you before you log in and collect the treasure a percentage of this bonus can be lost to other players.

This brings me to another way to gain gold and runes, and that is gaining revenge on players who have pillaged you. The social menu of the game shows you who has pillaged you and who has pillaged your friends. You can extract revenge on player who have pillaged you or avenged a friend of your who has been pillaged, both will give you so treasure back and gain you XP so its a win win situation. Continuing with even more ways to gain runes there is the daily missions. These can be defeating campaign opponents or playing online matches against certain enemies to simply sharing your progress on facebook. Once these stipulations are complete you will receive a number of runes, the missions once complete are then replaced the following day with new ones so you can earn more runes. One final way to earn runes is to download and use some of the other programs which are advertised, this part i'm not a fan of I'd prefer the freemium pay for the cards maodel better than this but fortunately like I say Gameloft have a good balance between those that wish to pay and those that are prepared to put the extra time in to earn the gold and runes, without having to go down this route.

Overall

If youve always hated trading card games then Order and Chaos Duels isnt going to change your mind. This however means that those that do like this type of game are going to find this a real winner. Its addictive and with a little more work in the multiplayer area of the game it will have the longevity that this type of game requires. The Freemium model is a pet hate of mine and of many others however Gameloft has struck an excellent balance here allowing you to play the game sucessfully without spending and real money it simply takes longer to get the epic cards. But this means you get to play more to get there no great loss.

Its similar enough to Magic the Gathering for those players to easily pick up and play and learn and different enough for it to be a completely different game with different strategies required to win. Overall this is a winner and something that I havent been able to put down for very long. It has the added advantage of being very pick up and play, you can play for 10 minutes or for hours. break time at work or while travelling or for a full gaming session this will be perfect.

Once again Order and Chaos Duels does require a couple of updates to make it a top game such as a better multiplayer and some bug fixes but the game is new and i'm sure will have plenty of updates in the future.

Hi,

I'm back from my trip to Cyprus and a bit of sunshine that this country wasnt providing with any consistancy. Big thanks to Neo who has been working hard recently making more excellent videos for the PantherProducts Team channel, please check out his work with funny vids, tips and tricks and game reviews. Catch them in this forum or head over to the Pantherproducts Team channel at YouTube

Now I'm back I'm going to spend a little time away from the back end working of the site and the updating of the guides and how to's inside Panther Products and spend a bit of time taking a loook at some of the apps that kept me amused on holiday while sitting in the sun. I'm not a big sun worshiper so I needed something to keep me busy while I was relaxing. And I found a few nice apps to use for those of you who like to be doing something even while taking in the sun. Just to note a phone or tablet with really good brightness will really help in these situations :)

In other news, look out for news on the new xbox coming to you on the 21st of May. The next Call of Duty Map pack "Uprising" already available on Xbox is soon to be available for the PS3 - 16th May. 4 new multiplayer maps and a new zombie level called "Mob of the Dead" Which takes the zombie mode to the prison of Alcatraz.

Here at PantherProducts look out for more great videos from Neo including the second part of the Dead Island Riptide review and I will be working on looking at Gaming keyboards, checking out the best the industry has to offer and showing you what sets gaming keyboards apart from the rest and not just the fact that they have many more buttons :)
