Asus A7V880
Another motherboard manufacturer to realise that the socket A platform was not dead is Asus. They have been one of the first few companies to get its KT880 motherboard to the mass production stage. The Asus A7V880 features a dual memory channel bus, up to 4Gb of memory support and a host of other features unique to the Asus board. Although the KT880 has been eagerly awaited for months on end. The only difference between this chipset and the KT600 is the dual memory controller the KT880 provides. It gives the board a peak memory bandwidth of 6.4Gb/s when using DDR400 memory. Apart from this the features are the same. The KT880 boards also use the same south bridge (VIA VT8237) as its predecessor. Having said that potentially doubling the speed of memory retrieval on many circumstances is a major speed boost for your PC, which makes you wonder why VIA have taken so long to release it on the socket A platform. This technology has been available for the Pentium 4 for a long time in the form of the PT880 chipset.
So what sets the Asus A7V880 apart from the rest of the motherboards in the KT880 range. Well firstly the name of Asus gives you an indication of quality as they have been at the top end of their filed for many years. That is not always an excuse to just buy from them though. Asus does give a couple of handy extra's. Asus WiFi Slot The Asus WiFi slot is a slot on your motherboard designed to only connect the Asus Wireless network card (ASUS WiFi-b™). Because it was designed with one card in mind, compatibility issues do not arise and you can be sure that you get the best performance when using a wireless network in your home. 6 Channel Audio and Sound max digital audio system The SoundMAX Digital Audio System is the industry's highest performance and most reliable audio solution for business professionals, audiophiles, musicians, and gamers. SoundMAX Digital Audio System can output 5.1 channel surround sound and features state-of-the-art DLS2 MIDI synthesizer with Yamaha DLSbyXG sound set, 5.1 Virtual TheaterTM and supports and major game audio technologies including Microsoft DirectXTM 8.0, Microsoft DirectSound 3D, A3D, MacroFX, ZoomFX, MultiDrive 5.1, A3D and EAX. Asus C.O.P. (CPU Overheating Protection) The Asus CPU overheating protection is a hardware circuit that automatically shuts down the power of your system before any permanent damage can be done to your CPU. Asus Q-fan Technology Q-fan technology intelligently controls the speed of your CPU fan in order to get the most efficient cooling of your CPU while keeping your PC as quiet as possible. CPR (CPU Parameter Recall) Many overclockers will know that once you push the system to far it hangs. The biggest pain is having to reset the CMOS data each time it hangs to get the correct CPU setting back again. With CPR from Asus, once the system hangs the CPU clock is return to its previous state to prevent any further hanging of permanent damage.

Dual Channel Memory Bus The KT880 chipset comes complete with two independent memory controllers. This gives you twice the access bandwidth to the memory than before. The Duel Channel Memory Bus allows twice the data to be transferred per second than the previous DDR400 chipsets. AGP 8x Firstly it has AGP 8x support so you can fully utilize those latest graphics cards such as the Geforce FX and the Radeon 9800. This provides an AGP bus bandwidth of 2.1Gb/s instead of the 1.1Gb/s provided with the AGP 4x specification. With more and more complex textures coming into games the AGP bus speed is getting more and more important all the time as On-Card memory is not large enough to handle everything. DDR400 The current fastest memory available DDR400. DDR400 also known as PC3200. DDR400 provides a 200Mhz*2 memory system. Remember the days of PC100. In order to use the DDR400 memory at its full capacity you will need a CPU that supports 800Mhz FSB. USB 2.0 USB 2.0 is up to 40 times faster than the standard USB1.1 ports. This is great news if you are using external Hard Disks CD-Drives or scanning large pictures on a USB scanner. with 480Mbs transfer rate there will be no slow down is your USB transmission. Serial ATA Controller Serial ATA is the new way of connecting your Hard drives to your Motherboard. The current Serial ATA specification is ATA-150 (150Mb/s). The Asus A7V880 supports 2 S-ATA devices controlled by the south bridge. RAID is supported on these drives with RAID functions 0 and 1 available. You can learn more on RAID here.
