Epsons range of multifunction printers for the photo enthusiast market grows with the RX585. The RX585 looks like your standard All-in-one printer but the RX range from Epson has always been aimed at the photo printing market. The features of the RX585 reflect this with the 6 separate ink system with Claria photographic ink set for superior photo prints and longevity of those prints.

The 2.5" LCD screen provides an easy method to check which photos you are printing, easy selection when printing via memory cards or direct via digital camera. Functions on the RX585 also allow you to make last minute adjustments to your photos, such as cropping, red eye removal, brightness adjustments or even changing directly to black and white all without the need for any PC software involvement.

While the RX585 does photos tremendously well, the performance of shall we say more mundane tasks doesn't quite live up to what you would get from a general purpose model from Epson. With this setup being geared towards high quality images, you may want to think what the primary use of this printer will be before deciding on this model. If Photos are the main reason then this will serve you well, if however you only print a few photos then other models such as in the Epson DX range may well be a better and slightly cheaper option than the RX series.

As well as photo printing on paper media, you can also burn your images onto CD/DVD labels when on the discs by using the Disc tray. No need to print on the labels first anymore, plus if the blank media is of a printable type you may not even need a sticky label, just print straight onto your CD or DVD.

Epson has decided to go with a black look for the RX585 which personally I like, the latest technology seems to be going with the black casing instead of the silver and these printers seem to be at the forefront of bringing this style to the PC peripheral market.

The scanner is an A4 flatbed scanner on the top of the machine which scans at 1200 DPI. The scanner also operates as the one touch colour or black and white photocopier, which produces instant copies again without the need for a PC to be involved. Finally Epson does supply photo editing software free with the printer, but the RX585 lacks the OCR software that has started to be shipped with some of the other multifunction printers from Epson.

The RX585 has the following reported print speeds (in fastest modes)

Colour Text - 38 pages per minute
15x10 photo - approx 12 seconds
