Rome : Total War is the third in the series of total war, and by far the best one yet. The 3D engine has be overhauled and now for a strategy game it looks stunning. You can watch your battles close in and feel the action for yourself. Watch as your cavalry charge through helpless troops knocking them flying or watch as elephants use their tusks to piece and fling troops 40 feet in the air. The 3D models make so much of a different in comparison to the 2D sprites that have been previously used in the total war series.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Total war series of games, Total war has two types of gameplay combined. The first is a turn based game on a large scale map, where you move your armies about the lands, construct cities, defences and train new troops etc. However when its time for battle to commence you will be placed onto a 3D battle map of the land you are stationed at, and you will placed into a large scale RTS battle with all the units at your disposal. Total war focuses heavily on strategy rather than weight of numbers like some other RTS games. If you don't have a good strategy you could easily be cut down by a much smaller army.

As might be plainly obvious the edition of total war focuses on the Roman legions. What might be a little different in the version is that the campaigns that you will be assigned with are all Romans. You will be asked to defend Rome from invaders and expand the Roman empire by conquering other countries. You will be under control from the Senate at Rome. He will assign you tasks to complete which if successful you will be rewarded for. Defeat however will put you in bad favour.

Rome Total War has many modes for you to try, firstly there is a very informative tutorial campaign which I do recommend that you play. Then you have 3 different versions of the Imperial campaign. In each you start with a different faction of the Roman empire. Completing these campaigns will unlock others for you to play. There is also the skirmish mode where you choose a faction and battle it out for total domination with a number of computer controlled factions. Also there is a multiplayer option, which unfortunately is limited to battles but fun never the less.
