Sports fans in general when choosing games tend to lean towards football sims and football management games. Rugby takes a second seat, however rugby is a growing sport and since England won the world cup Rugby has become a sport supported by the the nation. This reflects in the gaming industry as many rugby games hit the market to tackle the demand.

EA sports has been on the rugby gaming trail for a few years now and has produced some stunning games. Like the football series the rugby games are coming out of EA's production line once a year. We are now looking at Rugby 2006. Another imaginative title that gets straight to the point. Those of you new to rugby will like the fact that rugby 2006 does have a tutorial to run you down the basic rules of the game. It doesn't take you through every fine point of the game, that is left for you to learn and it may be worth reading a little on the rules of rugby before getting mad when you keep giving penalties away.

Like with most EA sports games there are subtle differences and additions in each new version of the game. In rugby 2005, once you were tackled successfully you were heading to the ground with the ball every time. Now in Rugby 2006 EA has added the offload. You will see this many times in international rugby. The offload is the art of passing the ball to a team mate while being tackled. While a risky manoeuvre it certainly could setup a try scoring opportunity. The purist rugby fans will definitely appreciate the addition of the offload.

The game has a number of animations mainly when you are tacked the camera will cut away to show the tackle before the game resumes. This isn't as annoying as it may sound because when tackled in rugby the game slows down anyway while the ball is released. These animations look great as does the rest of the game play. Another credit to EA sports player models. EA has also secured many of the licences available so the teams are real and so are many of the players and leagues from around the world.
