This is the first instalment of a cricket simulation since Cricket 2002. They have had time to make plenty of improvements to the game. And to some extent EA sports have given the game of Cricket on the computer a new edge. The gameplay has certainly improved and the skill required has been tweaked to stop you from beating it too easily. However the visuals are still only average. The Stadiums look nice but the players still seem a way off looking too good. The sounds are fairly dulled down as you would expect for a cricket match but you do get commentary from Richie Benaud even if its a little bit repetitive after a short while. A problem that the Playstation 2 users might encounter that the PC gamers won't is the memory card usage. Each game profile takes up nearly 4Mb. We are talking half a memory card here. That is a serious amount of space for most PS2 users to spare. Surprisingly though after the initial creation of the profile, saving is relatively quick and easy. The main addition to the game is certainly the introduction of the batters confidence meter. While in previous incarnations of the game if you figured out how to hit a big shot you would be able to do it all the time. The confidence meter allows your batter to gain confidence as he hits good shots and accurate shots. Good timing gives your player the ability to grow in confidence and attempt the bigger shots. If you should attempt to slog straight away you will more often than not find yourself going back to the pavilion a little quicker than you would of hoped for.
Cricket 2004 hosts all the types of cricket games you could wish to have,
from full blown test matches to 10 overs a side slog sessions. Also
included are knockout tournaments and touring of countries. (Click pics to enlarge)
