Quake 4 takes you back to the story of Quake 2. Now the Quake series isn't renowned for its story lines and after Quake III and its Multiplayer focus The Quake series has been looked upon as a Online Multiplayer game. Quake 4 does have a multiplayer option but is very focused on the single player aspect. The Basics of the story line are that at the End of Quake II you as a Marine have killed Makron, the leader of the Strogg. Now you have been given a name, you are Matthew Kane a Space Marine ready to finish the job of destroying the Strogg. You will enter the arena to clear up the loose ends, but as always things are not always what they seem. As a classic first person shooter, you don't speak but your group mates and other around you will be very chatty towards you letting you know what you will be facing and to give you information and guide you. I imagine many of you looking to buy Quake 4 will have already bought Doom 3. There are differences with What I.D. Software are trying to achieve with each of these games. Doom 3 was a creepy game, played in the shadows. Its intension was to provide suspense, the scare you and to create an atmosphere like no other game before it has provided. Quake 4 is much more rapid, more action based. You relay on your reactions, quick thinking and co-ordination to blast through the seemingly endless enemies coming your way. This brings us on to the weapons. They are pretty standard for a first person shooter. You start off with the hand blaster which is a unlimited ammo gun that can fire single shots or be built up to shoot a larger blast. This is soon replaced by the Machine gun which undoubtedly will become your best friend throughout the game. Even if you keep it stocked for a back up weapon. The machine gun carries a light which allows you to look in dark corners for extra ammo and other goodies. After that you will come across the Shotgun, Nail gun, Rail gun, hyperblaster, Rocket launcher, the lightning gun and the the BFG equivalent is the Dark matter gun. Your friendly marine will be able to upgrade your weapons as some of them start out a little sluggish. Graphically the Quake 4 is stunning. Like Doom 3 was, Quake 4 looks just great. I.D. has really worked hard in recent years to get their games looking the best around. You may even see some more of Quake 4 than Doom due to the fact that a lot more of it will be played in the light.
