Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare was a massive success, the single player game was awesome and the multiplayer surpassed everything that had every been made before it. Never since Counterstrike has a multiplayer game gained such a following and mass acceptance as being one of those games that revolutionised a genre. So how do you follow such a game? Well firstly you don't alter the features of the game that made it so great in the first place. Call of Duty - World at War uses the same game engine as COD4 Modern Warfare, but is now set back into the age of World War II, the setting for all of the Call of duty series except for COD4. Taking the game back to the WWII era throws back the striking realism that came with the call of duty games, the brutal world war as opposed the the precise striking of the modern warfare game does give you more of a sense of what it was like to fight a war.

The multiplayer game also hasn't been tampered with too much. The basics of gaining experience to claim a ranking ladder is still the same. Experience is gained by completing challenges, winning matches and slaying your opponents. New weapons are unlocked as you progress through the ranks, and of course the perks system is still in tack. The perks system allows you to choose different abilities and upgrades to use which gives a customisable edge to the game. Choose the upgrades that suit your own style of play. Extra effective weapons, steady aim, last stand, dropping a live grenade when dying and many more perks are available to choose from, like the weapons these become available to you as you progress through the rankings and gain more vital experience.

The fact that world at war seem so familiar obviously has its plus points, the gameplay is well tested, the controls will be easier to master if you've played call of duty games before and the graphics are sharp and realistic. But the same thing that makes the game so good, can have its bad points. World at war, although set in a completed different surrounding, with a completely different storyline can quite easily start to feel like an add on instead of a new game. Lets not take anything away from the single player game though, as with all the call of duty series, world at war's storyline is gripping and keep's you playing. The multiplayer game is still just as exiting as COD4. But if you bought modern warfare to play the multiplayer game, then maybe you want to keep on playing COD4 as world at war offers only a few different features.

What Call of Duty World at War does bring you however on the ,multiplayer front is new co-operative modes. You can play the same campaign with another player either online or in split screen mode. Also available is an exclusive 4 player co-op mode when playing online. To spice things up a bit you can activate competitive scoring which allows you to keep track of your score and attempt to beat your friends and other opponents as well as beating the game.

Completing the campaign mode will unlock a bonus game called Nazi-Zombies, yes you read that correctly, Nazi Zombies is a multiplayer bonus game, with no real end to it, but involves a lot of fun. The idea is you are barricaded into a house surrounded by yes you guessed it, Nazi Zombies. Surviving as long as possible is the aim, as you and your team kill the surging zombies and repair the barricades to stay alive. Of course the game is scored so kill as as many as you can, and survive as long as possible before you meet your inevitable demise.

Overall despite the familiarity of the game, Call of Duty - World at War's storyline is well worth the money. The features that worked have been kept in this edition, which I think was a good move. It isn't broke and there was no need to fix it, the next version will have to change of course as you you can't keep on recycling the same game. But for now, the game's engine, its multiplayer modes and its excellent graphics are not looking tired, and a new storyline and setting was all that was required to make this call of duty a guaranteed hit.

Features of Call of Duty World at War

  • Call of Duty 4 Technology - Built using the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine, Call of Duty: World at War utilizes a bedrock of technology that delivers jaw-dropping visuals, while empowering players to employ elements like fire to affect the dynamics of the battlefield. Players that attempt to harness the power of new weapons, like the flamethrower, will find themselves capable of burning away environmental elements that give cover to a camouflaged enemy, leaving a charred battlefield ? and their foes ? in their wake.
  • Coordinated Assault and Support -For the first time in the franchise, Call of Duty: World at War introduces co-op, bringing fresh meaning to the "No One Fights Alone" mantra. Call of Duty: World at War co-op features up to four-players online, or two-player local split-screen, allowing gamers to experience harrowing single-player missions together for greater camaraderie and tactical execution. The title also incorporates traditional multiplayer components such as challenges, rankings and online stats into the co-op campaign for deeper re-playability and advanced gameplay.
  • New Theatres of Operation - Players fight as U.S. Marines and Russian soldiers facing enemies ? some new to the Call of Duty franchise ? that employ lethal new tactics and know no fear, no mercy, nor the rules of war. Epic conflicts are fought on multiple fronts, playing through the climactic battles of WWII in the grittiest, most chaotic and cinematically intense experience to date.
  • Innovative Multiplayer - Multiplayer builds from the success of Call of Duty delivering a persistent online experience for more squad based interaction. New development with party systems allows an intimacy with squad based combat never before seen in Call of Duty. Combined infantry and vehicle missions add a new dimension to the online warfare and offers more PERK abilities.
  • Cinematic Quality Graphics and Sound - Treyarch's award-winning sound department returns with effects that add to the already immersive cinematic intensity of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare game engine.
