Webmaster Resources - Monitoring your Site

Now you have site online and people are visiting your site. However you don't know how many or where from. This information is vital, you need to know which pages are getting the most interest and which search engines for example are giving you most traffic. Knowing this can either make you concentrate on where the visitors are going or you can change your strategy, at least you know where you are going wrong. So what do you need. Well I would start with weblogs.

Weblogs

Weblogs vary in complexity and information they provide also in price. I think however that you can get a decent free weblog program that will be adequate for most sites. Here at PantherProducts we use AXS Script from Fluid Dynamics. This script lets you see how many visitors have come to your site, which pages they visit, where they come from and much much more. Weblogs don't have to be in depth like this. Most hosting companies have a simplified tracking system that you can have setup automatically. Alternatively if you would like to simply know how many visitors you have got coming to your site you can can a third party site track your stats for you with a simple bit of code added to your website.

SiteTracker is a free hit counter which does some of the things that the more complex scripts do, and they host it all on thee site. Worth taking a look at.
Easy Counter is a more simple counter that tracks hits for each of your pages.

Link Popularity

In this day and age the search engine has become very refined, they take into account more than just your sites relevance to the search terms. This also take into account how many pages are linking to you and the quality of pages linking to you. Google started this off with its Page Rank feature. Page rank is a calculation known only to Google. Many factors are taken into account when calculating the Page rank (more commonly known as PR). If a site with a high page rank links to your site you site increases its own page rank. Lower page rank sites that link to you also increase your page rank but not by as much. Incoming links to your site are good news. You do not lose page rank for having a link to somewhere else. (unless the site is a known link farm) Knowingly linking to these sites can potentially harm your PR.

You can check which sites are linking to you and how many pages are linking to you with some of the following resources.

Marketleap.com has a link popularity checker that allows you to see which search engines are holding the most links to your site also lets you see how well you are doing in comparison to some other sites from the less known up to Microsoft. You can also choose URL's to compare against.

linkpopularitycheck.com allows you to see what links AltaVista, MSN and Lycos/Alltheweb hold that are linking to your site plus the quantity of pages from each search engine.

Website availability

If you are running a business website then its vital that your website stays online. A great way of sorting out problems starts by knowing that they are actually happening. You do not look at your site 24Hours a day to monitor it. But what if someone would. Website availability checker will have someone monitor your site and tell you within 5 minutes when your site is having problem. They can tell you by e-mail, txt or pager. You can act instantly and stop losing sales.
