Now
we save the best till last.
Office tools are notoriously
large in size, but now you
can get a word processor,
spreadsheet, database,
drawing package and a
presentation tool all able
to fit on a reasonably sized
USB Flash Drive.
While all the applications we have looked at so far are undoubtedly
very useful being taken from computer to computer, the portable office
we feel is going to give you the most benefit. Having your own word
processor, spreadsheet and database with you wherever you go along with
the files you create is a big plus. Also you get A drawing package and a
presentation tool. You will need a slightly larger USB Flash Drive than
for the others but considering some office packages go into gigabytes of
data, getting an office suite onto a Flash Drive is triumph for for the
designers and programmers. Portable Open Office is the program we are
going to be taking a look at. You can download
Portable Open Office here.
Open Office Writer
Open Office
writer is a great little word processor. For the size on the disk it
takes, the feature list is everything you would need in order to get
writing those documents and editing files that you have taken with you
on the move. Open Office writer is fully capable of opening and editing
Microsoft Word documents and saving your files in many formats including
plain text, open offices own writer format and Microsoft Word doc
format.
Open office writer can handle hyperlinks to websites, it can
produce and edit table layouts and of course it can handle images. All
the basic tools for word processing are of course all there like text
layouts, sizes colours and paragraph options. All in all this is a
fantastic program and the fact that its free is a massive bonus. The
creators of Open Office do not charge but they do have a link to donate
to the progression of the program. If you like open office giving a few
pounds or dollars towards the program will help them along to producing
even better programs for you.
