Nvidia Nforce 650i SLI Chipset

Summery - Nvidia's nforce chipsets are very popular especially with the users of the Geforce SLI systems. the 650i SLI Chipset itself comes under the "very solid" category, giving the end users everything they really need without the expensive extras that push motherboard prices well over £100. The 650i SLI offers High definition audio, S-ATA ports and Gigabit Ethernet to compliment its Dual graphics card PCI express slots.
 


The Nvidia Nforce 650i SLI Chipset is designed for the Intel range of processors based on the Socket 775 platform. The CPU's comprise of the Core 2 range including the Extreme, Dual and Quad core CPU's, Pentium 4, Pentium D and the Celeron D. So this chipset gives you a broad spectrum of processors that can be used with it. Benefits of this are that motherboards with this chipset can also support this long list of processors, increasing their selling potential and allowing users an easier upgrade option without the need for a complete system overhaul.

There is more than one version of the 650i chipset, the 650i Ultra has a single PCI express slot for the the graphics card using 16 lanes, the SLI version has to Graphics card slots but only allocates 8 lanes of PCI traffic to each. This sound like it will be a serious bottleneck because each graphics card is effectively only getting PCIe 8x, but when you realise that each lane can handle 250MBps in each direction, you won't have a problem with 8 lanes at this current time. And for the price of the motherboards with this chipset again, there is not reason for complaints. Also if you don't have an SLI setup you can set the PCI express lanes configuration to allocate 16 lanes to the first PCI express graphics card slot.

The Nforce 650i chipset sports other great features as well as offering useful SLI, The FSB can be raised to 1333Mhz where the CPU can support it, and also 800Mhz DDR2 Memory is supported. Both Serial ATA and Parallel ATA are supported with the Serial ATA speed being rated at 3Gb/s. Raid standard are available as well (See the table below) High Definition Audio is also included as with most chipsets these days. To top it off Nvidia provide nTune which will take care of all of your motherboard monitoring and overclocking needs.
